soundscapes

At Quantum Acoustics, we go beyond traditional noise measurement and management by providing Soundscape Assessments aligned with the ISO 12913 series of international standards, focusing on how sound is perceived and experienced by people within a specific context, not simply how loud it is.

A soundscape is defined as the acoustic environment as perceived, experienced and understood by people in a place, encompassing all sounds, including those that contribute positively to calm, identity, activity and wellbeing, as well as unwanted sound (noise). This human-centred approach recognises that environments with similar sound levels can be experienced very differently depending on context, sound sources and people’s relationship with the place, and therefore considers both the level and quality of sound. Soundscape Assessment provides valuable insight beyond conventional noise assessments by examining how sound influences perception and behaviour, helping determine whether spaces feel restful, vibrant, monotonous or intrusive. Our services support planning applications, Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG) assessments, placemaking initiatives and Local Authority policy development. We offer a comprehensive soundscape service that includes baseline soundscape characterisation using acoustic, psychoacoustic and perception-based data in line with ISO 12913 best practice; perception-based analysis to identify attributes such as pleasantness, eventfulness and appropriateness; design-led recommendations to enhance, manage or protect valued acoustic characteristics; and clear, robust reporting to support planning decisions and policy frameworks. By integrating technical rigour with human experience, Quantum Acoustics helps clients design, assess and manage environments that deliver high-quality, people-centred acoustic outcomes.
